PhotographySA is merging into photomarathon.eu

That's right! Consolidation, baby!

PhotographySA.com is merging into photomarathon.eu. Both are photomarathon oriented but the latter is more globally oriented. Photomarathon.eu also keeps track of the worlds photomarathons.
And they're both operated by me ;)

Future photomarathons organized by PhotographySA.com will be sourced from the photomarathon.eu website and will be branded accordingly. If you've registered with PhotographySA.com, your registration details have been moved to photomarathon.eu and have not been shared with anyone.

Be aware that some links might need to be updated.

Pretoria photomarathon winners

The judges did well and selected 9 fabulous winners (well, 8 actually). They all win nice prizes; camera bags sponsored by Crumpler South Africa.
Like last time, the judges had their own ideas on what categories to hand out prizes for, meaning there was no real distinction between analogue and digital, nor a big prize for best series.

Some of the winners weren't at the prize ceremony on Friday, September 28. They better hurry up, or they might lose out on getting their prize.

First prize winners

Barry Brady and Ismail Farouk win a large Crumpler bag. Barry Brady for Sports illustrated and Ismail Farouk for No man's land.

Barry Brady - Sports illustrated

Ismail Farouk - No man

Second prize winners

Reg Caldecott for his series and Dieter de Lange for Lust win a medium sized Crumpler bag.

Dieter de Lange - Lust

Third prize winners

Third prize winners win a small Crumpler bag. They are David Ceruti for Sports illustrated, Dieter de Lange for Love at first sight, Russel Grant for Sixth Sense, Jonathan Thome for his analogue series and finally Kate Graham for Lust, for being most daring.

Photomarathon Pretoria exhibition on September 28

Friday the 28 of September will see the opening of the Photomarathon Pretoria exhibition at the Outlet gallery in Pretoria. The cash bar will open around 6pm, prizes will be handed out around 7pm. If you were a participant, Outlet was the start and finish of the photomarathon. If you weren't, here are some (correct) directions.

If you're unable to attend this Friday, the show will run for a few more weeks, but the gallery can only be visited by appointment. Contact Abrie Fourie for more details: 082 7754272.

Crumpler South Africa has been so good as to donate no less than nine(!) prizes. This means that up to nine photographers -could- win a nice Crumpler bag. So, photographers, you better show up.
Bring friends, family and vague acquaintances!

Photomarathon photographer and organizer win prestigious Highway Africa new media award

Ismail Farouk, urban geographer and photomarathon participant last year, together with photomarathon organizer Babak Fakhamzadeh, created the website Soweto uprisings . com. It's a mashup, combining Google Maps, Flickr, Wikipedia, GeoURL and then some to display, in a very visual and interactive way, information related to the Soweto uprisings of 1976.

This week, at the Highway Africa conference in Grahamstown, South Africa, Ismail and Babak were awarded the prestigious Highway Africa new media award.
Soweto uprisings . com was called "the most innovative website in Africa". And who are we to argue?

All submissions to the 2007 Pretoria photomarathon

Well, you've been able to view, comment and vote on all submissions to the Pretoria photomarathon for, what, a day now, but you know you can't have enough. Now you can hang them above your bed.

PhotographySA.com photomarathon 2007 :: Pretoria

The work above is available through Flickr. It's available under a creative commons license which, in this case, means you can download and distribute it but you have to mention the original authors, can't make any money from it and can't create any derivative work from it.

You can also order a large print (82x72cm at 300dpi) with me (contact info) for 350 Rand. That is at cost. You then have to pick up your print on the day of the exhibition on September 28, at the Outlet gallery in Pretoria, before 7pm.

There's also another print coming with the winning works highlighted.

Pretoria aftermath

We tried hard to dissuade hordes of participants showing up by giving out wrong directions and nearly succeeded as, in the end, only 30 die-hards showed up on yesterday's early morning for the Pretoria photomarathon.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the only surprise we had to endure as Abrie Fourie, curator of the Outlet gallery, suffered from unexpected home shoppers during the night before the photomarathon. It was the reason why we had to take registrations on the sidewalk: not only his equipment, but also his keys were stolen.

Still, all photographers seemed to have had a great time and I'm quite impressed by the photographs which have been submitted. All pictures will be online somewhere in the next 24 hours.
Only two photographers went the analogue route, one of whom ended up having a fight with her camera, meaning that only one analogue photographer ended up handing in a roll of film. We'll have to see what the judges say, but that could be one surefire way of obtaining a prize.
Also, very surprisingly, we had no one shoot video. Maybe it's too hard?

Here are the themes the photographers had to work with:

0. Your photographer ID

1. Lust
2. Proudly SA
3. Thabo's rise
4. Dutchman

5. Twin Peaks
6. Sixth sense
7. Snowwhite
8. Sports illustrated

9. Love at first sight
10. ABNORMAL LOAD
11. No man's land
12. This one is cryptic

The judges will be getting together later this week.

Don't forget the opening of the exhibition and the prize ceremony on September 28, also at the Outlet gallery. The directions to get there are now correct. So, really, you have no excuse to miss this one.

Directions and details

The 2007 Pretoria photomarathon starts and ends at the Outlet gallery. How do you get there?
First, the address:

Outlet Gallery
Projector Room, Building 10, Arts Factory
Tshwane University of Technology
24 Du Toit Street, Pretoria

Be there at 8am!

Directions to the Outlet gallery

From Johannesburg, take the N1 north, to Pretoria. At the N1/N14 interchange, keep going straight. This means you'll end up on the N14 north.
At the end of the N14, keep following the road, which is now called Potgieter street. Watch out for the speed camera.
After quite a few robots (that's traffic lights, for you foreigners), take a right into Struben street. Struben street is also the N4.
After quite a few traffic lights again (robots, for you locals), take a sharp left onto Du Toit street. The entrance to the campus is almost immediately on your right.

Inside the grounds, take a right and keep driving until you see a large blue building. Park your car, Outlet is on your left.

Stuff you need to know

You really should read the page with more information on the Pretoria photomarathon. What's possibly even more important is the page with rules.
Here are some very important bits:

  • You are responsible for giving us your pictures or videos. That might mean you have to bring a laptop or a card reader. We can't promise you you'll have access to a computer to sift through all the images you took. We'll have a card reader, but if you've got an obscure card or camera, you will have to figure out how to give us your submissions.
  • You can only hand over twelve pictures (thirteen, counting a picture of your participant ID) or videos. If you're shooting analogue (film), you only get to shoot twelve (well thirteen) images.
  • You have to shoot the images in sequence of the themes.
  • You remain the copyright holder of your work.
